Who: Matt MacFarland
What would you like people to know about your zines?
My mini-comics (Dark Pants, My Troubles with Crumb and the Teaching Chronicles) provide me an opportunity to reflect on past experiences, failures, successes, mis-steps and move forward with some amount of dignity and grace in the hopes that others may either learn from my mistakes or take solace in the fact that we all have the capacity to mess up and learn from it.
Tell us about a zine maker or zine that has had an impact on you.
Adrian Tomine’s Optic Nerve was a revelation when I discovered it in the mid-90’s. I appreciated how he could tell such a compelling story that was completely based in reality and addressed real-world problems like failed relationships, job insecurity and family strife from the perspective of a twenty-something like me.
What are you looking forward to at L.A. Zine Fest 2019?
I’m not a social person, but I always really enjoy meeting new people in the context of this event. The creative energy coursing through the venue is always very impressive and inspiring.
