WHO:  The Strange is Beautiful

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THE ZINES YOU CREATE AND/OR WHY YOU ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO TABLING AT L.A. ZINE FEST 2016?: I make zines because there are no rules involved – there’s no old-school requirement to follow a specific graphic format or any censorship. Likewise, I made The Strange is Beautiful alternative self-help zine with the intention of allowing each page to creatively, and individually bloom so that the readers can do so too. I’ve tabled at LA Zine Fest a few times, and every year I feel the same feels – it’s one of the few places that I can be my full self, out in the open, no judgement, no negative vibes. I hope you can discover similar feelings of “sukha,” lightness, and “sthira,” stability, in The Strange is Beautiful. Use it as a reminder of how to find ease, peace, comfort and love. Use it as a tool to build resilience to triggers and stress. Everyday is a practice. Posi Vibes, Shannen. P.S. The inspiration photo is my friend Mckenzie. She taught me to be okay being me.

Get to Know Your Zinester features collages of the 2016 Fest exhibitors.
